Philip Backwell started his exciting life - long artistic journey as a Ceramic Artist. The journey began in 1979 as an apprentice to Vaughn Stewart (a well - known Canadian Potter). The impact of this inspiring experience led to Philip's desire to expand his creativity in design and technical knowledge, resulting in the achievement of a two - year Arts degree (Pottery major) at Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario.
In his enthusiasm for the arts, Philip ran his own pottery studio & showroom for the next 28 years. Along with performing the responsibilities of being president of the Norfolk Potter's Guild in Simcoe, Ontario, Philip taught beginners to advanced pottery courses also. Some of his other fulfilling accomplishments involved the privilege of teaching at Haldimand Arts Works, procuring a studio technician/instructor position at the well - known Burlington Arts Center, and artist - in - residence/instructor for the Homer Watson House and Gallery in Kitchener, Ontario.
Along the many years of his artistic journey, Philip has always had a passion as well for photography. Mostly self - taught, it is now currently his main artistic direction. The skills and principles of design, color and composition that Philip has learned over the years has effectively been expressed in his photography. He has captured images of the West Coast powerful ocean, majestic mountains, cloud formations or something as delicate as a flower by taking advantage of the ever changing natural light.
It is Philip's sincere desire to use his photographs to emotionally touch the viewer... whether in a serene tranquil way or a dramatic "WOW FACTOR".
